As part of our commitment to maintaining a calm, safe and focused learning environment, we would like to remind families that mobile phones and smart watches are not permitted for use in school during the school day. This includes at the start and end of the day, once they are through the school gates phones and smart watches should not be used.

This approach reflects current Department for Education (DfE) guidance, which states that schools should be mobile phone-free environments and should prohibit the use of mobile phones and other smart technology with similar functionality throughout the school day, including breaktimes and lunchtimes. The guidance specifically includes devices capable of messaging, making calls, receiving notifications, accessing the internet, or recording audio and video. 

Research and experience show that restricting access to phones and smart devices during the school day helps to:

• Improve concentration and engagement in learning.
• Reduce distractions in lessons.
• Support positive social interaction between students.
• Minimise risks associated with cyberbullying and social media.
• Promote pupil wellbeing and safeguarding.

If a student needs to bring a mobile phone to school for travel or safety reasons, it must be switched off and stored in their bags and must not be seen this includes Blazer pockets. Smart watches must not be worn during the school day unless explicitly authorised by the school for medical reasons or other exceptional circumstances.

Students found using a mobile phone or smart watch in breach of the school's policy will have the device confiscated and sanctions will be applied in line with our Behaviour Policy and it would need to be collected by a parent or carer. 

Sixth Form students may use mobile phones only within designated Sixth Form areas and during authorised non-teaching periods. Phones and smart watches must not be used in lessons, corridors or communal areas of the main school.
