A new art piece has taken centre stage at the Sherwood Church Academy this September. The best time to view it is as the morning sun hits as students arrive for the day. Remember to look up!

 

This art sculpture has been collaborative from the start with students in years 7-9 working together to combine Art and Spirituality.

Students began by considering the themes of fear and love in a student led Act of Worship. This thinking and exploration was continued in Religious Studies lessons before creating the sculpture in art.

The sculpture represents journeys from fear to love. Students developed a deeper understanding of how challenging fears can help us move to a place of embracing love, whether that is within ourselves, towards others or outwards to the world around us. The sculpture is made up of masks, butterflies and hearts, cut out of metal by students.

The masks represent fear, the butterflies represent transformation and the hearts represent love. The sculpture was designed so that light would travel the journey from one to another. In Religious Studies students explored how fear and love made them feel, and how these emotions influence their actions. Students considered what the voices of fear and love say to them and how they can listen more closely to the voice of love.

The installation of the sculpture was crafted by some clever maths from the maths department, and the site team hung it beautifully in place. 

This sculpture represents students voices, unity and collaboration as well as the journey from fear to love.
